Playground surfacing

Project Overview

Shepherd Community Center had an existing playground with a mulch surface. The mulch was frequently tracked throughout the facility by children, requiring annual refills. Additionally, the mulch did not provide adequate protection for potential falls from the playground equipment.

Client’s Vision

The client wanted a playground surface that was low-maintenance, provided sufficient protection for children in case of falls, and remained visually appealing.

Our Goal

To replace the existing mulch with a durable, safe, and attractive surface that minimized maintenance needs while ensuring child safety.

Strategy

We measured all playground equipment and determined that covering the entire playground with a poured material would be most effective. This material, made from reground tires and coated with a durable, colorized top layer, was tested and approved to handle falls from heights of up to 12 feet.

Solution

The installation process involved:

Removing all existing mulch
Excavating to prepare a gravel sub-base
Blowing in a 3.5” layer of reground rubber mulch
Applying a 1.5” poured-in-place colorful rubberized top coat

Transformation

Before the project, the playground relied on a mulch surface that required constant refilling and offered limited protection for children falling from the equipment. After the installation, the playground was transformed into a safe, low-maintenance space with a colorful, durable rubber surface that fully protected children and eliminated the need for ongoing upkeep.

Conclusion

Because the surface was blown in and poured in place, no playground equipment needed to be dismantled. The project was completed in approximately two weeks. That school year, children enjoyed a safe, comfortable playground surface, and the facility benefited from a maintenance-free solution.
